Tom Blomqvist Racing Driver
As a big fan of F1, The McLaren Team and modern architecture to be given the assignment of visiting McLaren’s Headquarters in Woking was … all pleasure and no work.
The McLaren Group Headquarters building is magnificent and is the home to McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive. It was opened by the Queen in 2004. The semi-circular building (designed by Norman Foster) features a series of artificial lakes one of which completes the circle of the building. The lakes are also used to dissipate the heat that is generated by the wind tunnels that are used to test aerodynamic parts.
I was there to photograph the very pleasant 18 year old Tom Blomqvist (son of legendary Rally World Champion Stig Blomqvist) who has joined the prestigious McLaren Young Driver Programme.
Tom won the 2010 Formula Renault Championship … as did Lewis Hamilton in 2006. It is only drivers with the right approach, attitude and potential that make it onto the program and McLaren will be giving Tom their expertise and experience – I really hope he goes on to become another great British champion.
