Mobile Phone Roaming Charges
More often than not it is the simple editorial assignments that turn out to be the most challenging – such as last week when Helsingin Sanomat needed to quickly file a story with the news that Europe will finally abolish mobile phone roaming charges this June.
The challenge was to find a Finish national in London who would be willing to be interviewed & photographed and to get the story and images back to Helsinki within a couple of hours – my own challenge was to think of a picture idea that was not mundane.
On that particular day there must have been hundreds of Finns touristing in London – but where do you find them? A good suggestion was to go to Heathrow and fortunately the timing was good as passengers on a Finnair flight to Helsinki had just started checking in.
The idea I came up with was to ask the person to take a selfie and for them to show that image to the camera so that the mobile was the main focus (as with the story) yet still showing an image of the interviewee – I felt it worked.
