David Bowie 1947-2016
Being born in the fifties I grew up with Bowie and for me he was quite simply the best, so many memories from the Space Oddity, Hunky Dory & Ziggy Stardust era.
On the morning of the 11th when his death became known David Bowie fans started to create makeshift shrines around London. Dagens Nyheter’s London correspondent Pia Gripenberg and I went to Brixton where he was born. A mural in Brixton shows Bowie in his classic Aladdin Sane make-up and mourning fans paid their respects by laying flowers.
The small street was crowded with media and numbed, saddened shocked people, I had a Déjà vu and was to later remember it reminded me of being outside Kensington Palace the day after Princess Diana died.
Regrettably I never went to a Bowie concert. I did 2 years ago visit the fantastic ‘David Bowie Is‘ exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London where I purchased a postcard that I had framed and it sits on a wall at home – it shows Bowie wearing a Union Jack frock coat designed by another British icon Alexander McQueen back in 1996, when McQueen was still relatively unknown. Bowie used the coat on the cover of the album ‘Earthling’.
