Borough Market
London’s oldest market Borough Market lies south of the River Thames in the London Borough of Southwark. There have been food markets in the area as far back as 1014.
The current market buildings are from the Victorian period and are nestled amongst the railway lines coming out of London Bridge station. In strong contrast to the old market lies just a couple of hundred meters away London’s newest & highest building the contemporary glass pyramid The Shard.
Borough Market Food
Borough Market was known in its heyday as ‘London’s Larder’ I have heard it recently been called ‘London’s Foodie Heaven’.
Originally a fruit & vegetable market there are over 100 individual stalls selling a wide range of produce. I was amazed to see an artisan stall selling fresh Zebra Burgers along with other exotic meats including kangaroo, water buffalo, springbok and crocodile. For lunch i took a Thai red curry from one of the food stalls and I took home with me a fresh Dorset crab for supper – it was sublime. I absolutely love the diversity of all the fresh foods available under one roof.
Borough Market Restaurants
Borough Market has enjoyed an enormous renaissance in recent years and there are many gastropubs, nice restaurants and trendy cafes in the market itself and in the surrounding streets. One restaurant I would like try on a return visit is the Wright Brothers that sell English oysters that can be washed down with a nice glass of Porter (a dark style of beer originating in London in the 18th Century).
