So what is a Headshot?
A Headshot is where the persons face is the primary focus of the picture and the subject is photographed showing the head and shoulders and part of the chest.
Headshots are primarily taken with studio lighting using 2 or 3 light sources that eradicate any harsh shadows. The subject makes eye contact with the camera and has a slight smile for a more formal headshot and a broad smile for a relaxed headshot.
A multitude of coloured backgrounds can be used however the most favoured choices are black, white and grey as they are less distracting and the focus of attention remains on the subject.
A white background remains the most popular choice as the subject can easily be digitally extracted and then copied onto diverse backgrounds for use in different publications.
Once the lighting and background is set up a large number of staff can be photographed promptly thus making it cost effective for companies with many employees. The easiest manner of photographing headshots is for the photographer to set up portable studio lighting at the clients establishment so that that the client does not have to arrange for employees to make time consuming journeys to a photographers studio.
And what is a Portrait?
A Portrait is an image that portrays a person in a suitable setting that enhances the persons personality and character.
Portraits can be taken as head and shoulders, half and full figure, various lighting methods can be used such as studio, daylight and ambient lighting.
A portrait is often best photographed on-location (outdoors or indoors) using an appropriate enviroment that enhances the person character and can even show elements of the persons place of work, interests, and company branding.
For optimal results a portrait session should be booked as an individual photo assignment with ample time set aside so that photographer can produce a series of personalised photographs.
