Hilary Mantel
Hilary Mantel CBE has twice been awarded the Booker Prize, in 2009 for the novel Wolf Hall, and in 2012 for the novel Bring Up the Bodies.
It was a couple of weeks ago when I met Hilary at her publishers offices in central London. The offices were charming but gave no inspiration so it was with relief that Hilary happily went outside for me to photograph some portraits. She was very pleased with the location – Gray’s Inn, where Thomas Cromwell was elected as a member in 1524. Thomas Cromwell is the protagonist of her trilogy, the last part of which she is writing now.
We had just a few minutes for the photography and we stepped out into the lovely spring morning and walked the short distance to Grays Inn where I took some pictures, out of nowhere it started to rain? what was a clear blue sky moments before was now a Spring shower, Hilary raised the hood on her jacket to protect herself from the sudden gusts and light rain – and I had my picture.
