Douglas Carswell UKIP
2 days before the Clacton-on-Sea by-election we visited the seaside town to do a story about Douglas Carswell who remains the odds-on favourite to win today’s poll triggered by his defection from the Conservative Party to UKIP.
We arrived at UKIP’s Clacton headquarters just as Douglas Carswell also arrived shaking hands with supporters and UKIP voluntary workers. The office was a hive of activity and full of journalists “the train up from London was full of just media folk” someone joked.
As photographers from Reuters, Associated Press & Getty Images were present (who between them could put a photo in every newspaper around the world) a photo opportunity was announced that Douglas Carswell would be out door knocking in Clacton – which he did and resulted in my favourite image from the day as he notices a UKIP sign in a bush as he walks down a street. We took a traditional Fish & Chip lunch on the seafront and then returned to London.
Update: Douglas Carswell wins the Clacton-on-Sea by-election by a majority of more than 12,000 to become UKIP’s first MP.
