Caroline Criado Perez
An assignment for Dagens Nyheter to take the portraits of Caroline Criado Perez a feminist, writer, campaigner and Consultant.
In 2013 Caroline successfully campaigned to keep a woman on an English Banknote and that year the Bank of England announced that Jane Austen would appear on the £10 note from 2017.
In 2016 having noticed that the eleven statues overlooking Parliament Square were all men she launched a campaign for a statue of a suffragette to be erected. In 2017 a statue of women’s suffragist Millicent Fawcett (by Gillian Wearing) was erected in the Square in a ceremony attended by Sadiq Khan and Theresa May.
For the initial portraits I chose to meet Caroline (and her dog Poppy) at the All Souls Langham Place Church – the small church in front of the BBC in Langham Place, London. Feminism in the UK started in the early 1860s with the formation of the The Langham Place Circle by a group of woman who also formed the magazine Woman’s Journal. They met at 19 Langham Place which was destroyed by bombing in WW2 and is now where the BBC stands today.
